At Coorg Fort

We spent two days in Coorg on our way back to Kerala from Bangalore. Its best to start early because the last few kilometres is an uphill drive on bad roads which are best negotiated in day light and not in the twilight with car lamps. The drive to Madikeri passes through this dense forest and can get adventurous in the late evening but its quite an experience! The coorg valley also boasts of tea and the famous coffee plantations making the hillside a carpet of green. We enjoyed our stay at Club Mahindra.
Coorg was pleasantly cool in October, the night though got quite nippy. There is lots to see there. WE mamaged to see the gaddige and the fort while had to skip "Abbey falls" owing to poor light and bad roads. Gaddige is the seat of three mausoleums in memory of the early coorgee rulers. Though islamis in the ir forms complete with minarets, they willl surprise you in their hindu motifs including the nandi perched prominently at the corners. The Fort is another interesting set of spaces enclosed by the batter walls with a repetition of the brick jalis as a strong motif seen in the Gaddige. The higher vantage points offer a good view of the City.
What we enjoyed most was the drive through the hillside roads winding and swirling flanked by breathtaking beauty that was worth savouring. The trip was refreshing to the senses.
And while you are at Coorg, don't forget to taste the famous pork curry served with rice!
